Today, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine reported the first confirmed cases of two new Omicron subvariants in the country: Nimbus (NB.1.8.1) and Stratus (XFG), which are currently dominant worldwide.
Nimbus (NB.1.8.1) was detected in Vinnytsia region during August using advanced genomic sequencing.
Stratus (XFG) has been confirmed in 38 cases across Ukraine, while Nimbus has been confirmed in one case.
Although both subvariants are new, they do not cause more severe disease than previous variants. Nimbus often presents with a sharp sore throat, while Stratus can cause hoarseness, as well as typical symptoms such as runny nose, fever, cough, headache, fatigue, and loss of smell or taste.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that vaccination remains the most effective protection, especially for high-risk groups. Ukraine is introducing Omicron-adapted vaccines that are updated each season to target current circulating variants.
This announcement highlights the natural evolution of respiratory viruses, which requires constant monitoring, preventive measures, and vaccine updates.
